The STEAMies project has officially begun with its first transnational Kick-off Meeting in Limnos, Greece, hosted by the Junior High School of Livadochori Limnos. Partners from Greece, Portugal and France came together to launch a European journey dedicated to STEAM education, citizen science, air and water quality, and action-oriented learning.
Over two productive days, partners discussed the project vision, roles and next steps, focusing on transforming environmental challenges into meaningful learning opportunities for students. STEAMies aims to connect STEAM subjects with real-life issues, empower schools as citizen science hubs, and encourage students to become researchers, active citizens and environmental problem-solvers.
A central part of the meeting was Work Package 2, the educational foundation of the project. Partners explored the STEAMies Methodology, national resources on school-driven air and water pollution initiatives, the upcoming Learning/Teaching/Training Activity in Portugal, and future workshops where students will assemble and use air and water monitoring kits.
The meeting also addressed Work Package 3, focused on moving from environmental observation to concrete action through school action plans, DIY sensors, data collection and local mini-projects. Work Package 4 was introduced as the framework for dissemination and sustainability, including school exhibitions, video testimonials, open-access data visualisations and community events.
The Limnos meeting strengthened cooperation, clarified responsibilities and set a roadmap for implementation. STEAMies is now underway, bringing schools, teachers, students and communities together for cleaner air, healthier water and engaged citizen scientists across Europe.
